Release - Trying to Embrace the Experiential Side of Learning This Summer

I am going to start this post with a disclaimer.  My family is fortunate.  We are blessed with good health, to be born here, in Canada, together, and for a plethora of other things, including a supportive family and network of chosen family and friends who help us raise two pretty freaking fantastic children.  Deep breath.....

Every person has 'their things".  The things they aren't good at, the things that they're self conscious about, and the things that they need to work harder at than others.  These are the things that make us stronger, or so just about any Pinterest or Instagram Post will tell you.  But, sometimes it sucks.  Sometimes you're on the treadmill and it keeps on speeding up and you just want to jump off and curl up in the corner or just get a minute to drink your Gatorade and catch your breath.

Having twins, who were born early, and in the latter part of the year, we knew that there would often be catch up in terms of things that other kids could do.  The minions were late to get their teeth, just like they were late to crawl, walk, and talk.  During extensive speech therapy there were times where I thought Jack would never be able to communicate with us. While he's still really shy, within the reaches of his own selected inner circle, he is witty, funny, and an amazing storyteller with a vocabulary.  There were times in SK that I thought he'd never draw or write, but thanks to our work with him, his teacher, and an Occupational Therapist, he's cranking out Super Hero Comics every day - something I thought impossible less than a year ago.

Building on the Beach Summer 2017

School has not been the easiest for either of my kids, particularly Jack.  They're both progressing, but as learning speeds up among their peers it gets more difficult.  Sometimes it feels like we've been speeding both kids along towards milestones that they meet on their own timeline anyway.  I am thankful to all of the teachers, tutors, medical professionals, OTs, and everyone else who has helped to nudge our kids forward.

Sometimes I wish that the kids could learn at their own, self directed pace, without the fear and stress of falling back.  I wish that academic and milestone driven things came easier to both of them, but they don't.  I am happy that my kids are hard workers, and they've never known any differently.  I am hoping that this work ethic sticks with them for a life time, and that we don't push them too hard.

Both are working so hard, and now we have a tutor who we hired this spring, who will continue to work with the minions all summer long to help them maintain and build upon their school learning one to two times a week.  I am happy that this time is something they can work on with their tutor, at their own pace, for two whole months before they're held up against their peers.

In the meantime, because we've 'outsourced' academics for the summer, we can make our time with them about experiential learning and not about 'fighting' them to practice their letters, reading and math.  We can write comics, crafts, postcards, and birthday cards instead.  Both kids want to try new recipes (Molly wants to bake a carrot cake).  We are going to work on learning to ride our bikes, tie our shoes, enjoy nature, hike, and read books on our own reading list.

It's time to take our foot off the peddle and just coast a while, we may end up learning more than we ever hoped!

There's A Hole In My Bucket - Summer Family Bucket List

The minions really loved knocking items off of bucket lists since we started the project last winter, and we've continued it each season.  I've been a little MIA on the blog front, but a lot of that was work in preparation for a summer filled with more time with Molly and Jack - which means more content, reviews, and everything else.  The kids are getting more and more involved in helping me crate these lists which is one of the reasons why they're getting a lot longer.   Most of these items are for the family, but some are for me as an added motivation for my 101 in 1001 goal/bucket list, and since I'm a little late posting this, we've checked a few items off already.

I love bucket lists because the have inspired us to book activities, appreciate what each season has to offer and get out and move, even when we were tempted to just curl up and binge on some Netflix - which when it's cold or rainy outside is really easy to do.  Use this to help build your own summer bucket list....and feel free to share suggestions.  Let's get out there and make some memories people!  Summer will be over before we know it!

Things My Kids Say As Posted On Twitter

We spend a lot of time with the minions and I'm fortunate enough to record the things that they say and do so I can look back on it and laugh.  Some of it makes the blog and other smaller moments don't.  One of the brilliant things about Twitter is how it's the ultimate parenting "elevator speech", because you have to keep it short. Below are recent Tweets, conversations, parental musings and things that the minions have done or said over the past month, for your reading pleasure that haven't made it to the blog.

Paperback Writer - Sharing My Writing on other sites

It's that time where I get to share some of the work that I've completed over the past month.  I am lucky enough that I get to research some fun topics and learn something new almost every day (even if sometimes it's just celebrity gossip).

Today for my full-time job I write and ghostwrite articles for online publications, organizations and blogs, in addition to providing public relations services.  While I can't really share my ghostwritten articles on this platform, cause then I wouldn't really be a ghostwriter would I, I can share some of the other stuff I have been working on.

Click on the links for the topics that interest you most, and if you enjoy what I wrote please share, like, and follow, and keep parenting and reading on!  If you have any ideas for a story, a playground review, or article on any front, feel free to shout it out!  I'm always looking for new sources of inspiration!

Behind the Garage - Tips for Hosting a Garage Sale

I've made it one of my goals to get rid of a lot of clutter in my life. It's amazing just how much stuff you amass over the years, and when you have children it's like you have tiny hoarder versions of yourself.  I still have no idea why Jack feels a need to save the box and instructions from every single Lego kit he's ever received, even though I've never, ever seen him return to a set of instructions to rebuild something that he completely dismantled two days after he and Chris built it.  I digress, this weekend we held our first garage sale since we had the kids and I'd say it was a mild success, earning us enough money to pay for all of us to go on a family trip to Ripley's Aquarium to feed Molly's need for more information about sharks - her current favourite thing in the entire world.

14 Tips To Up Your Garage Sale Game

Yard Sale

  1. Pick your date & a rain date well in advance
Try to avoid long weekends when a lot of people are away.  Look for weekends when other things (like street sales and fun fairs) are going on in your area to increase the foot traffic.
  2. Know what to sell ahead of time
Some items, like bikes, scooters, skates, and old hockey helmets are best sold ahead of time. You can advertise online, or trade in for the next size, and will usually get more money for something you post on Kiji or Craigslist than you would at a yard sale.
  3. Get your kids involved in clearing out their stuff
Pick set times, this often works best in three to four sessions spread out over a week or two to go through old books, toys, stuffed animals, and clothes to figure out what you're going to sell.
  4. Sort & Price Your Items
Get boxes and bins to help sort your items by type and price, and be sure to make the price clear to potential buyers.  Nothing makes me walk away from a thrift shopping experience faster than no pricing.
  5. Talk to your neighbours
Tell them you're hosting a sale, maybe they'll join in and add to the buzz about a huge street sale in your area.  At the very least they may pop over and buy something.
  6. Make Posters
Posters printed on bright colours (think Neon) will stand out best.  Make sure the printing is large and legible.  Include your address, the date and time of the sale and don't forget to list what you're selling to help generate the right audience.  (i.e. have old records or baby gear, list it)

  7. Promote Online
You can post your event in community Facebook groups or on Kijiji a few days in advance to help spread the word.
  8. Poster placement
Put up your posters on high traffic corners in your neighbourhood, think lights, near crosswalks - places where people are passing through on foot and stopped in their car at lights.
  9. Be prepared to poster more than once
People rip down posters, and sometimes it rains.  Poster 2-3 days in advance and then again the night before or morning of.
  10. Prepare a cash float
A $20-$30 float in various change and small bills is all you'll need.
  11. Have more than one adult on hand
For coffee runs, snack runs & bathroom breaks
  12. Be prepared to bargain
People love a haggle for better pricing.  If they're taking big items off your hands, particularly as the sale is ending, it's less stuff you need to deal with.
  13. Make part of your clean up a donation runDon't just put what doesn't sell back in your home or garage.  Load up a vehicle and take it straight for donation.  For bigger items you can leave it at the end of your driveway with a giant 'free' sign and most of it will go in a matter of hours.
  14. Tear down your signs
Take a walk around your area and pull down the signs, no one likes a litter bug.
