Our Day At The Uxbridge Wizard Festival

For Molly's birthday we bought her a Hermione Granger costume.  Shortly after, I started getting targeted ads for Harry Potter related things on my social media accounts.  Apparently the Harry Potter algorithms work, because we ended up buying tickets to go to an Uxbridge Wizard Festival & Hallows Express Train Ride through The York Durham Region Heritage Railway.  Targeted marketing works.  Molly and Jack used some birthday money they'd received to pay for their tickets and Chris and I bought our own.

Tickets for the event were pricey, but the kids were super excited to dress up and have something to look forward to.  We bought the Premium Tickets which included entrance into the event grounds as well as an hour long train ride for a journey to deliver evil prisoners to Goodwoodora Prison for $55 per person.

When we saw the schedule called for rain ALL DAY LONG, we put on our rain boots under our wizard cloaks and set out for a day of magic, fun, and adventure!

Best Parts of The Event

The Enchanted Alley was a lot of fun.  Kids were able to take wizard classes in potions, weather spells, and a bunch of other interactive mini shows like Quidditch Matches and House Duels.  Molly was even called up to the front of a tented 'classroom' to make it snow!  People who had tickets to the train were permitted to attend an area that had Hagrid's Enchanted pets, Jack was happy to see snakes, lizards, and a bunch of other animals.  There was someone there with birds of prey including a falcon and white owl, but we only got to see the falcon.  People dressed in character around the park and were happy to take pictures with the kids - even the person whose name we're not supposed to mention.... Shuttle buses took you from parking/registration to the train and to magicians alley/park.  We never had to wait more than 3 minutes to get on a bus which was nice.  Because of copyright issues a lot of things were Harry Potter esque without explicitly saying it (like our train platform was 19 and 1/2), but it was fun to see how they changed things.

Look who is being creepy...

Worst Parts of The Event

It was cold in the rain.  I know that's no ones fault, but some heat lamps (or hot chocolate for sale that was actually hot) would have helped a lot.  While the train ride was fun, it was geared towards younger kids and I'm guessing by the time Molly and Jack were 10 or 11 they would have found the show on the train on the cheesy side.  There was a maze by the train apparently, but the location wasn't well marked and we missed it.

Molly wasn't thrilled that the sorting hat put her in Slytherin

What We Spent

There were add ons that came in addition to our $55 per person ticket.  Parking was $10 in advance and $15 at the door.  Food from the fast food stand wasn't bad (for 20 dollars we got three burgers and two hot chocolates).  The kids insisted on using gift money and their allowance to purchase chocolate wands that were a whopping $15 a piece.  While a lot of merchandise (like the $24 t-shirts) were reasonable it would have been nice to see some more stuff in the $10-12 range.  I'm a little sad we didn't see any chocolate frogs.

Was It Worth it?

It was a fun day, but an expensive one. We were there from 11am to just after 4pm and probably would have stayed later if it were a warmer, dryer day.  The kids will be talking about it for ages. I would go back again, but may not splurge on the train tickets (which would have saved us $30 a ticket) next time because we've already done it now, even if it meant not seeing the amazing creatures.  If your kids love Harry Potter and magic it's worth checking out next fall.  There are also other train based events in Uxbridge including The Polar Express for Christmas and Thomas the Train events.  For a link to the schedule click here.

Maker Halloween Costumes: The Green Goblin

Jack loves Spiderman and everything Spiderman related.  His choice to be a Spiderman Villain, The Green Goblin wasn't much of a surprise.  One of the neat things about his costume was that he wanted to make it his own.  He keeps on talking about becoming a film maker when he grows up, so reinventing characters is something we're seeing more and more of from him.

When Jack first saw the Toby Maguire version of Spiderman a few years ago we had to turn it off because he was so scared of Willem Dafoe as The Green Goblin.  At first we talked about a robotic mask like Dafoe's, but anything we found was way too expensive (like in the $60 to $90 price range), so we decided to take another approach.

He wanted his costume based more in horror and less in cartoon, but still with a nod to the original comic character.  Here's what we came up with, how we did it, and how much it cost us:

The Face: We decided early on that face paint was not a good option.  We saw some half masks that looked closer to the comic Green Goblin, but it would still require green face paint for the bottom half of his face.  On a trip to Once Upon a Child we were able to find a used Zombie/Goblin/Warrior mask that Jack fell in love with for $8.99 - bonus points it has red eyes that light up.

The clothes: We went traditional with the clothes for Green Goblin.  At Value Village used we were able to pick up a men sized small purple t-shirt for $3.99 for me to cut into a shredded tunic, we were also able to get a green long sleeved t-shirt for $2.99.  We are borrowing a pair of purple leggings from a family friend,  purchased a pair of purple gloves for $1.99, and a pair of purple socks for $2.99.  For the belt we used a pirate belt that we had in our dress up box.

The Accessories: Jack really wanted me to build him a hoverboard on a skateboard or a flutter board, but because he doesn't know how to skateboard, I couldn't find a flutter board for less than $23.99 on Amazon (and knew I'd be carrying it all night anyway) we skipped it.  We purchased a brown leather purse to use as a satchel at Value Village for $3.99 and bought a set of pumpkin lights at the dollar store for $3.50 to make our pumpkin bombs.  For the light up pumpkin bombs I glue gunned in sparkled pipe cleaners (for $1.25) to be the lit ends of the pumpkin bombs and zipped them into the purse to keep them in place.

I am particularly happy with the 'light up' aspect of this costume as it will increase his visibility to cars on Halloween night!

Total cost of this costume to us: $33.54 tax included.

Maker Halloween Costumes: Teen Titans Go! Raven

Molly has wanted to be Raven for Halloween for nearly a year.  While I've yet to have a year where the kids change their minds on a costume at the last minute (fingers crossed it remains this way), we don't allow them to officially decide on their costumes until summer.

Because I usually piece our costumes together, like to buy used, recycle etc. it takes some time to put a costume together, but with growing kids it doesn't make sense to make something for them until closer to the time.

Raven has always been Molly's favourite Teen Titan and who can blame her - Raven is awesome. She's half demon, half human, and makes my teen goth heart melt.

Most costumes online for Raven range from $40 to $50 and there's no way we were spending that, plus it's a lot more fun to build one myself.  Here's how we did it.

Raven showing a typical look of disapproval of other Titan antics

Raven Unleashing her power

Molly already owned a long sleeved black gymnastic suit so this was free to us (however I saw some used at Value Village and Once Upon a Child for around $4-$7 depending on the condition and size).

Since Molly knew she wanted to be Raven for Halloween and loves playing dress up, she asked for a purple crushed velvet cloak for her birthday and was kindly gifted this by friends and was no cost to us.  Hers retailed for $16.99 from Amazon (and qualifies for Prime shipping if you need it quickly).  The best thing about these cloaks as they have different sizes so you don't need to worry about anyone tripping on their cape come Halloween.  The cloak does a lot of the work for 'making' the costume.

Next we bought a black stretchy belt at Value Village for $1.99 and a necklace for $1.99 (also from Value Village) so I could break it apart to glue gun the red gems for her belt.  You can also glue gun a broach as a closure for the cape if you want to be especially authentic.

Raven has a gemstone on her forehead.  We just raided our craft centre, but you can get several sheets of these at the dollar store for $1.25.

The other new item we bought for the Raven costume was a pair of purple Halloween socks, adult size so they go further up the leg and are more noticeable.  These cost us $2.99 at Value Village. She is wearing these with a pair of black jazz dance shoes that were hand-me-downs from her cousin, but really any dark coloured shoes will do.  On Halloween she will wear light grey or white leggings under her leotard because it's Canada and will be chilly at night.

Total cost of costume to us: $7.36 (Tax included)  Total Approximate cost to anyone who has to purchase every item for the costume: $33.00 (Tax included) - still significantly cheaper than getting a box costume.  So: Azarath Metrion Zinthos And Happy Halloween!

Things My Kids Say As Shared On Twitter

We spend a lot of time with the minions and I'm fortunate enough to record the things that they say and do so I can look back on it and laugh.  Some of it makes the blog and other smaller moments don't.  One of the brilliant things about Twitter is how it's the ultimate parenting "elevator speech", because you have to keep it short. Below are recent Tweets, conversations, parental musings and things that the minions have done or said over the past month or two, for your reading pleasure that haven't made it to the blog.

1. J: I like diarrhea. It’s funny. I just hate it when I have it. #parenting #kids #thingskidssay

8. It’s near the eve of their eighth birthday and my kids still manage to do stuff like get silly putty all over our couch (and claim “it’s just cheese”). This is why we can’t have nice things #parenting

Family Halloween Movie Bucket List

Halloween is a huge deal in our house.  The minions have caught the Halloween bug from us, perhaps that's because they live in a home that roughly resembles a Tim Burton museum.  This year we even had to put a rule into effect that the kids weren't allowed to talk about their Halloween costumes until at least May.

While we're working hard on our costumes, more on that later, and decking our halls with haunting knickknacks (that happens tomorrow), we're also looking for some Halloween based or haunting inspired movies and TV specials to watch.  So, last night we came up with a list of family favourite Halloween movies to watch, ones we're going to try this year, and ones that are just for the grown-ups.  Enjoy! Also if you have a Halloween movie you love watching with your kids, please share.  I can't wait to add it to our list.

I'm going to check them off as we watch them.
