Hiking & Exploring Wye Marsh

We've been fortunate that it's been a warm fall. As such none of the winter activities like snow shoe rentals have opened, even north of Toronto yet. It will likely be another week or two before they do. Because of this, and because we needed to get outside, we ended up breaking our "no hiking unless it's at least six degrees outside" rule. It was worth it, even though it was close to -10 with the wind chill.

This past Saturday we hiked 5KMs worth of trails at Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre.

Wye Marsh boasts being open 362 days a year and is located just north/west of Orillia in Tay, Ontario.

Entry is $12 for adults and $9 for kids and is well worth it. Covered in your entry is some bird seed to allow you to feed the Chickadees while you wander the grounds.

Wye Marsh is a charitable organization that houses 3,000 acres of wetlands and woods. It is also home to 12 birds of prey, 6 turtles, and 2 snakes who require special care and would not survive in the wild. We were particularly taken with the snapping turtle, white owl, and bald eagle.

We spent over two and a half hours exploring the grounds, hiking, and enjoying the company of our chickadee friends.

Seeing the ducks and swan gather on the pond while ice began to form around the edges was pretty, especially since we don't get out into the wild quite as much this time of year.

When my sister in law saw the photos she mentioned that we all officially became Disney Princesses with adorable birds eating out of our hands. I argued that we were maybe a little more like the bird lady from Home Alone 2, but it was an amazing experience just the same.

The kids explored a lean-to shelter along the hike.

The boardwalk hike provided an easy to follow path for us.

One of the benefits of masking up for COVID-19 prevention is that your mask also keeps your face warm.

Along our path we spotted a small dock spider looking for somewhere to wait out the winter. Can you see him?

Wye Marsh is also home to bees. You can even buy their wild flower honey from their gift shop.

Such a pretty, frosty day. I'm happy to report that our new thermal gear worked and not once did anyone complain about being cold. We will definitely be back here, maybe in the spring and summer to enjoy some of the sites via a canoe rental and may try some snow shoeing here come winter. We are happy to support this amazing home for so many wonderful creatures! You can buy an annual membership, day pass, or simply visit their gift shop for some amazing purchases.  We think the kids will remember this specific hike for quite some time!

Broken

Nearly 13 years ago Chris and I were newlyweds.  Our home was filled with fluffy bath towels, shiny new toasters, and two bright eyed twenty-somethings who were just starting out.  In just over a month I turn 40.  Our wedding seems like yesterday and a million years ago at the exact same time.

Here's the thing about time.  It wears things out.  Just over a month ago our dishwasher broke, last week my laptop decided to permanently shut down, something that is more than an inconvenience for a freelance writer and PR professional - I'm going to be spending a lot of time at Best Buy and Staples and take advantage of a bunch of back to school sales, hopefully.  My iPhone has hit that critical age of two and a half where it acts like a drunk person, one month following a break-up of a long-term relationship  - erratic, sketchy, shutting down randomly, but works sort of, almost okay, 60 percent of the time.

A few days ago while I was cooking the lid handle came off of my favourite soup pot.  I'm currently using an 'I Love NY' plate as a make-shift lid on my crock pot.

It's amazing how your interests and priorities change over the years - or that we have more patience for the fact that towels can be frayed at the edges, and just wait for a sale, while spending our money on other things like tutors for the kids or a family vacation.

Today our home is filled with markers with their caps off (why is this so hard for them to master?), macaroni art on the wall, and couches with springs sticking out the back from kids jumping - it's pure chaos.  As frustrating as necessities breaking down, like my laptop are, I need to remember that although our wallets are light, our hearts are full.

The kids are nearly seven, and some days I can barely remember life before them.  I just need to suck it up, and make it all work.  One day, a broken pot or laptop won't seem nearly as big of a deal, but I won't be comforted by a bed full of Lego men, or a barrage of cards from my daughter professing her love for her mama.

I'm thankful for all of it - broken lids and all!

There's A Hole In My Bucket - Summer Family Bucket List

The minions really loved knocking items off of bucket lists since we started the project last winter, and we've continued it each season.  I've been a little MIA on the blog front, but a lot of that was work in preparation for a summer filled with more time with Molly and Jack - which means more content, reviews, and everything else.  The kids are getting more and more involved in helping me crate these lists which is one of the reasons why they're getting a lot longer.   Most of these items are for the family, but some are for me as an added motivation for my 101 in 1001 goal/bucket list, and since I'm a little late posting this, we've checked a few items off already.

I love bucket lists because the have inspired us to book activities, appreciate what each season has to offer and get out and move, even when we were tempted to just curl up and binge on some Netflix - which when it's cold or rainy outside is really easy to do.  Use this to help build your own summer bucket list....and feel free to share suggestions.  Let's get out there and make some memories people!  Summer will be over before we know it!
