For A Little While

When the minions were little I remember actively willing various phases of their lives to end, looking for them to outgrow things.  Whether it was colic, teething, an ongoing cycle of daycare illnesses, biting, and more, there were so many things that I couldn't wait to be over.

Now that the kids are a lot older, it's a lot rarer for me to wish something away (no matter how many stories I've heard about The Amazing Spiderman, Michael Morbius, or actor Dane Dehaan).  A couple of years ago when we were visiting the minions great grandmother she said something that has really stuck with me - We get to borrow our kids for such a short period of time.

As my kids continue to have more firsts all the time, I am well aware of certain things they do that will eventually disappear from our lives, whether I like it or not.  One day it will be the last time that they do one of these things, and I probably won't even realize it until it's gone.

Celebrating Today!

Today I want to celebrate some of the things that I get to do with my kids right now, because soon enough they'll outgrown them.  Writing this has been a fantastic exercise in gratitude!

The way they climb into our bed for weekend morning cuddles

How excited they get when they lose a tooth

The way Molly always agrees to take the dog for a walk with me so we can "chat"

How she always reaches for my hand when we walk

How Jack gets a single tear that rolls down his face every time he eats something that he really, truly loves

Green Eggs & Ham

The minions have been head over heels for the new Netflix series Green Eggs and Ham. It's pretty cute and stars the voice-work star power of Michael Douglas, Adam Devine, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, Keegan-Michael Key, and Diane Keaton.

I Do Not Like Them Sam I Am, I Do Not Like Green Eggs With Ham

Since things have been a little stressful as of late I thought I'd surprise them with some Green Eggs and Ham for dinner last night.  Since my kids prefer their eggs scrambled I just added some food colouring to their eggs and painted some onto their ham.  For those looking for a little less food colouring enhanced eggs consider adding spinach.  Either way they were really excited and Jack thanked me five times.  Chris tried to convince the kids that green eggs came from green chickens and they made him Google it to prove his theory because they didn't believe him.

Are we going to The Dr. Seuss Experience you ask?  Only if we can find a Groupon or good deal online, until then this will have to do!

Push

When Jack is motivated to do something he is an unstoppable force.  The thing is, his motivations often are outside of traditional drives.  He could care less about athletics and passion for school projects come on a case by case basis.  Making comics about his life? He's on it.  Doing math? He's writing his answers messily and quickly to ensure he gets some time to sit on the carpet and read during his school day.  When he's bored he daydreams.  A lot.  Boredom doesn't always mean 'not challenged', sometimes it just means disinterested.

One of the most frustrating things about parenting is when your kids behave exactly like you did as a child. Every once in a while, when Jack has me at the end of my nerves, the husband is quick to point out that the acorn didn't fall far from the tree.

Since he was born, Jack has done things on his own schedule.  Walking, talking, potty training, and now school.  Over the years he has worked very hard on everything from speech therapy to occupational therapy.  It feels there is often an uphill battle or one on the horizon.

When it comes to school skills there are a lot of things he is perfectly capable of completing for his tutor.  Neat(ish) writing, check, concentration, check.  At school the myriad of distractions have this out the window.

Ideally Jack would perform consistently everywhere, but he doesn't.  So we've talked to him, constantly about being a bigger kid and that he needs to step up his effort.  How answers to written assignments are to be longer than one short illegible sentence, how emojis do not replace words in academic writing, and how a smidgen of effort towards team sports will go a long way in gym class.

So far all we've come up with is a 'When you' rule.  Where when he performs at the level we know he's capable of, consistently for a full month we order him whatever new book he wants from Scholastic.  If his performance drags, the book sits up on a shelf he can't reach until it improves. I hate the idea of withholding books for performance, and that it's counter intuitive to withhold an opportunity to read, but this seems to be the only thing working to motivate him.  Otherwise he'd spend all day at school reading and handing in half-assed assignments.

Anyone have any other ideas?  How do we reward Molly who is super motivated at school all the time? I should probably talk to his teacher.  Sigh.  So it begins....Welcome Back to School everyone!

First Day Of School

As we've been getting ready for the return to school, I am reminded of my own first days as a kid.  I remember being excited about my new 'cool' (it was never actually cool) fall wardrobe that it was way too warm to wear on the first day, but that I'd insisted on wearing anyway and broil - ALL DAY LONG.

via Giphy

I remember feeling excited and then equally disappointed on the first day of school.  Growing pains felt extra sharp after leaving the summer cocoon of life in day camp and hanging out at home.  I also remember keeping these feelings to myself.

One of my worst first days of school (try saying that 5 times fast) happened in my last year of high school.  Instead of celebrating the end of high school alongside people I'd known since I was a grade schooler, I switched schools. The choice was something very uncharacteristic for me and it was the first time I'd ever felt so alone.  So many people knew each other and I did not.  People were politically active and passionate about everything from global warming to vegetarianism to films.  I was not. I was a fish out of water.

As people paired off together I found myself alone, feeling overwhelmed and uninformed.  I went home and cried.  A lot.  I had asked for this. I had begged my parents to let me try out this 'strange alternative school' and I couldn't just throw in the towel.

I wiped off my tears.  It became a year that I met lots of interesting people who taught me a lot, I became comfortable with myself and being alone. I read, a lot, and I pushed my limits academically in a way I never had before. I found my first writing voice.  I earned a university scholarship.  I met a lot of interesting people who were very different from me and I found a confidence in myself that I never knew existed.

One of the things I want to remind myself, and a lot of parents about, is that the easy transitions aren't always the ones that make us grow.  Tonight, on the eve following the first day of school, I have one child who is very excited about what is ahead, the other who is hesitant.  What the year brings them, none of us know yet, but if it's a tough one it will also be one where they grow and learn a lot about themselves.

Happy First Day Of School!

Together - Should I Keep My Twins In The Same Classroom?

Now that the minions are older one of the most common questions I get involving their 'twinness' involves classroom placement.

"Are they in the same class this year?" - NO

"Have they ever been in the same class?" - NO

"Was it your choice?"' - YES, so far...

While every family is different when it comes to placing their kids, we've always relied on the opinion of the experts when it comes to where our kids end up classroom wise.  While, from what I've observed, parents in public school can generally request that their children remain together until around grade three.

When You Ask Them To "pose nicely'

The Early Years

When the minions were in preschool the early childhood educators (ECE) we worked with noticed a trend.  Both children (Jack in particular) did better at reaching their milestones when they were in separate groups.  In working with Jack through speech therapy, we found that Jack spoke more when he wasn't relying on his sister to speak for him.  We also discovered, the more he talked, that what Molly was saying Jack wanted or needed was often completely wrong.

Into Kindergarten

The transition into kindergarten can be huge.  This is particularly true for kids who have late in the year birthdays or have never been to formal daycare (outside of the arms of mom, dad, or relatives).  When we were asked about classroom placement for JK by the school we went by the advice from our Social Worker who helped with Jack's speech therapy, along with observations from the ECE staff who had worked with them for nearly three years.  One person made the comment that for Jack it was like he had a little mom or wife (insert Lannister jokes here) by his side all the time, and a break might be a good idea.  Another teacher noted that separating Molly from Jack would allow her to 'just be a kid' and not have to mother him, a role that she has always automatically taken on and one they both could use a break from.

To help with the early days of kindergarten the two were placed in classrooms beside each other.  For the first few months, and then later on if one was having a rough day they'd be allowed to have snack time together.  This provided both kids (Jack in particular) the support he needed without allowing him to lean on his sister too much.

Into Grade School

As a general observation, I find my kids are compared directly a lot less than identical or same gendered fraternal twins.  Just the same, by keeping the two in different classes teachers are less likely to subconsciously or overtly compare the kids and their academic performances or personalities.  They are also less likely to become competitive with one another, which was important to us.  The transition in our school board from a play based learning environment to an academic one from kindergarten to grade one was rough.  Kids who are placed together in kindergarten and likely to get stressed because of this change might benefit from being together until grade two for particularly tough transitions.

Some serious twinning going on here

Other Thoughts

There are several other sets of twins at school.  Some have always been placed together, but I noticed by grade two, most of them have been separated.  Since I don't really know their parents (cause I'm antisocial like that), I can't comment on how this has impacted them and their kids.  I can comment on Molly and Jack.  Because they aren't in the same classroom, they miss each other during the school day.  This means that when they get placed in the same summer camp, swimming lesson class, it's a novelty.  In the evenings and the weekends, they look forward to playing together.  On a school trip where I was volunteering this spring, a teacher asked me if the pair always got along so well when observing them at lunchtime. I was proud that my answer was 'Yes, most of the time'.  I think them being in different classes is a part of that.

Fellow multiple parents, what do you think? What's worked for you?  What hasn't?

Mom...I'm Sorry (Happy Mother's Day)

Each year I reflect on some of the more challenging and humorous moments with the kids.  A snapshot of my experiences as a mother.  I then think about all of the crap I put my mom through and form an apology letter. Some of these are specific to my life, but I am likely guilty of some pretty comparable crimes from when I (or my darling siblings were seven...

Dearest Mom,

I am sorry for...

  • waking you up by projectile vomiting all over your bed at 2AM
  • breaking my armoir door by stuffing so much of my random crap in it when I'm supposed to be cleaning my room
  • scratching your cornea with the corner of a comic book and leaving you unable to function for two and a half days
  • watching the dog eat your laptop charger cord (and doing nothing about it) because I was busy watching TV
  • faking sick from school so I don't have to go to an after school activity that you paid a lot of money for me to attend
  • pretending I was a superhero, falling down the stairs because I was leaning on the baby gate, and knocking out my tooth, on Christmas
  • confessing all of my urgent problems to you (hysterically) an hour and a half after bed time (when dad is out of town and you have a work deadline)
  • telling people that I was the one who taught you all about 'the eff word' because I say it so much
  • snacking on goldfish crackers in your bed because 'I felt like it'
  • telling you about those things that kid did to upset you, two weeks after the fact, when I can do absolutely nothing about it
  • borrowing your jewelry and immediately losing it/breaking it
  • making you sit through school concerts that are longer than Avengers End Game (even when my performance is less than 10 minutes long)
  • reminding you that it's library/swim/permission form day once we already arrive at school
  • waking you up whenever you nap because I need a snack that I am perfectly capable of getting myself

P.S. Still not sorry for the black lipstick I wore as a teenager!

P.P.S I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!

Release - Trying to Embrace the Experiential Side of Learning This Summer

I am going to start this post with a disclaimer.  My family is fortunate.  We are blessed with good health, to be born here, in Canada, together, and for a plethora of other things, including a supportive family and network of chosen family and friends who help us raise two pretty freaking fantastic children.  Deep breath.....

Every person has 'their things".  The things they aren't good at, the things that they're self conscious about, and the things that they need to work harder at than others.  These are the things that make us stronger, or so just about any Pinterest or Instagram Post will tell you.  But, sometimes it sucks.  Sometimes you're on the treadmill and it keeps on speeding up and you just want to jump off and curl up in the corner or just get a minute to drink your Gatorade and catch your breath.

Having twins, who were born early, and in the latter part of the year, we knew that there would often be catch up in terms of things that other kids could do.  The minions were late to get their teeth, just like they were late to crawl, walk, and talk.  During extensive speech therapy there were times where I thought Jack would never be able to communicate with us. While he's still really shy, within the reaches of his own selected inner circle, he is witty, funny, and an amazing storyteller with a vocabulary.  There were times in SK that I thought he'd never draw or write, but thanks to our work with him, his teacher, and an Occupational Therapist, he's cranking out Super Hero Comics every day - something I thought impossible less than a year ago.

Building on the Beach Summer 2017

School has not been the easiest for either of my kids, particularly Jack.  They're both progressing, but as learning speeds up among their peers it gets more difficult.  Sometimes it feels like we've been speeding both kids along towards milestones that they meet on their own timeline anyway.  I am thankful to all of the teachers, tutors, medical professionals, OTs, and everyone else who has helped to nudge our kids forward.

Sometimes I wish that the kids could learn at their own, self directed pace, without the fear and stress of falling back.  I wish that academic and milestone driven things came easier to both of them, but they don't.  I am happy that my kids are hard workers, and they've never known any differently.  I am hoping that this work ethic sticks with them for a life time, and that we don't push them too hard.

Both are working so hard, and now we have a tutor who we hired this spring, who will continue to work with the minions all summer long to help them maintain and build upon their school learning one to two times a week.  I am happy that this time is something they can work on with their tutor, at their own pace, for two whole months before they're held up against their peers.

In the meantime, because we've 'outsourced' academics for the summer, we can make our time with them about experiential learning and not about 'fighting' them to practice their letters, reading and math.  We can write comics, crafts, postcards, and birthday cards instead.  Both kids want to try new recipes (Molly wants to bake a carrot cake).  We are going to work on learning to ride our bikes, tie our shoes, enjoy nature, hike, and read books on our own reading list.

It's time to take our foot off the peddle and just coast a while, we may end up learning more than we ever hoped!

My first 101 days of 101 in 1001 - When Resolutions Meet Bucket Lists

I'm a list person.  You should see my day planner, it has hundreds.  There are few things that feel better to me than when I get to cross an item off my to-do list.  Here's the thing - in the everyday, my to-do lists are filled with work and chores and not a lot of big ticket life goal moments, and I wanted to find a way to change that, even if that change was me chipping away at some things a little bit, day by day or month by month.

In December I read an article that really spoke to me about creating a list of 101 things I wanted to accomplish in 1001 days instead of  a more traditional resolution list (check it out in full here).  Yesterday I reached 101 days into this mash up of a bucket list and resolution list and I'm pretty happy with this progress.

Yeah, I know that it's highly unlikely that I'm going to complete every item on this list in less than three years, but I'm going to give it a shot, and for added motivation I thought I'd share what I have managed to complete, to help motivate me to push harder, and what I am planning on tackling next with my next check in being 250 days into my 1001. Some of what I achieved was big, other stuff was smaller tasks, moments, or to-dos that I routinely put off, some is a work in progress that I won't report on until it's complete.

Here's What I've Managed to Cross Off My List So Far - 9 Items

Things My Kids Say As Shared On Twitter

We spend a lot of time with the minions and I'm fortunate enough to record the things that they say and do so I can look back on it and laugh.  Some of it makes the blog and other smaller moments don't.  One of the brilliant things about Twitter is how it's the ultimate parenting "elevator speech", because you have to keep it short. Below are recent Tweets, conversations, parental musings and things that the minions have done or said over the past month, for your reading pleasure that haven't made it to the blog.

1. J (in a panic): Mom, I don't know how I got this giant cut on my arm. Me (inspecting): That's just ketchup. J (licks arm): Well, that's a relief

2. Dad: Can you get me my cup from the music room? M: You mean the fart room? Dad: I mean the room with all my records and my record player. M: I call it the fart room, cause that's where I go to fart #smh #parenting

3. J: I hope I have this cold forever because I've really been able to focus on my #Venom impression #parenting #smh #FacePalm

4. M: I liked picking up J from his classroom.  I felt just like his mom, you know cause I was holding all of his stuff #parenting #roles #lifegoals

5. J: Let's take off our shirts, hug each other and pretend to be #Rambo #movietwit #parenting #films #ThingsKidsSay

6. Two polar opposite reactions to a dead goldfish.  M: lots of crying.  J (trying to cheer her up): Maybe he was taken over by Venom and the other fish had to kill him so he wouldn't destroy their world. #parenting #pets #fish

7. M: If mom died dad would have to drive us so many places. Me: Is that all u think I do? I help u with ur homework, pack lunches, organize your activities, gifts 4 friends, appointments Dad: Yeah I'd have to set aside maybe half an hour a day #facepalm #Motherhood #MyLife

8. J: When I grow up, I'm going to live here. I'm going to live here forever. So you better get a third pillow so I can sleep between you and daddy. (just wait till he's a teen and now I have a record)

9. Somewhere during today's Q&A about the birds and the bees my honesty led both children to assume their father can make random inanimate objects multiply "like when Gremlins get wet" at his whim, whenever he uses his "special seed" #SMH #parenting #facepalm

Red - Childhood Nosebleeds & Things That Go Bump In The Night

Sometimes the things that your children inherit from you are very strange.  Quite often my colds will end with a nosebleed to end all nosebleeds.  Molly, it seems, also has this sinus clearing bodily response from time to time.  For Molly this ALWAYS happens while she's sleeping, with the first one happening a couple of years ago, discovered by me when I went to check on her before I went to bed at around midnight.

As a parent it's incredibly terrifying to find your child, sound asleep, covered in enough blood to look like she's been practicing that infamous scene from Carrie.

Carrie Blood Scene

Now that the minions are six, most of our middle of the night stirrings have to do with nightmares, which means that all of us have become heavier sleepers.

The other night I was awoken by Molly standing beside my bed absolutely covered in blood, completely calm, asking for my help.   Bleary eyed, I cleaned her up as best I could and we moved together into the guest room, where our darkest coloured sheets live, to tilt up her head stop the fountain of blood and try to get some sleep.

Her pink sheets, pillow cases, and Cinderella pajamas look like something out of The Walking Dead.  As I pondered how to get out these stains, and asked Chris for advice, he simply answered, "Shouldn't you be worried if I knew how to 'take care of' this kind of mess?" I know who I'm not going to if I ever need to dispose of a body.  The sheets and Cinderella are currently soaking in a bath of cold water and vinegar.  Happy Friday!
